The lottery added Mega Millions to its portfolio in 2005. The first draw was held in Hollywood and the minimum jackpot was $15 million. Californians queued up well in advance to purchase their tickets. Mega Millions remains one of the state’s most popular lotteries today.

In 2013, the state added Powerball, with the first draw taking place on April 10. California also has five state-only lottery games, including the horse-racing-themed Daily Derby.

Are California Lottery prizes taxable?

The California Lottery withholds a percentage of lottery winnings over $5,000 for federal taxes. Check the Tax Information section for more details. Based on your overall annual income and tax liability, you may also be liable for state and local income taxes.

How long do I have to collect my winnings?

The California Lottery gives winners 180 days from the date of the draw to claim their prizes.

Where do California Lottery funds go?

Of every dollar spent by lottery players, $0.95 goes toward funding public schools, retail compensation, and prizes.

What happens if my ticket is stolen or lost?

Lottery tickets can’t be replaced if lost or stolen. Keep them in a safe place. Signing your ticket helps prove you own it, in case you lose it.

What lottery games can I play in California?

You can choose from Daily Derby, Powerball, Mega Millions, SuperLotto Plus, Fantasy 5, Daily 3, and Daily 4.

How old do I have to be to play the California Lottery?

You must be 18 or older to play.

Can I remain anonymous if I win a lottery prize?

No. Your name, the retailer’s location, the game date, and your winning amount are maintained in public records.

We suggest that you consult a lawyer before claiming any big prizes, however, as it may be possible to claim your prize through a trust to retain anonymity.

Can I buy lottery tickets in advance?

Yes, you can purchase tickets in advance for consecutive draws. Check our Advanced Draws section for further details.

Can I purchase tickets online or by phone?

No, tickets can only be purchased from licensed retailers.

In-person claims require an appointment. Call the claim center you wish to visit to schedule your appointment.
